The Champ is here. The Noah “Waggy” Wegrich Interview

Thanks for sitting down with us Noah! So for people north of the 49th that don’t know who you are, tell us who Noah Wegrich is.

Noah “Waggy” Wegrich: I’m 21 years old. I live on the south side of Santa Cruz, and I’m a surfer, kind of……. My favorite hobbies involve the ocean and/or traveling most of the time.

Living down in California, USA, what’s the surf scene like down there?

The surf scene in Cali is huge. I mean come on, who doesn’t dream of California girls and prefect points that glide into lustfully hollow beach breaks….. Canada’s scene isn’t quite so “Hollywood” but after spending a week or so out in Tofino I knew it couldn’t be real! The people were giving off these auras of aloha. The food was bomb dot com and there were waves and skate parks. The waves were fun beach breaks with the potential and possibilities around every nook and cranny. It’s also one of the most beautiful and serene places I’ve ever laid my eyeballs on. Huge mountains tower around you with massive forests going all the way up into the heavens peaks. So I’d have to say there very different; but in retrospect both amazing places to kick back and enjoy life!

What do you enjoy more, free surfing or contest surfing?

I enjoy both free surfing and contest surfing; I don’t do a whole lot of contest surfing because it’s sort of a rich man’s sport. Given the choice of traveling or competing, I always will take the trip. I love new places, people and the thrills of adventure.

What made you decide to come up to Canada and compete at 2015 Rip Curl Pro Tofino?

I was invited by my friend Logan Landry to come up for the Rip Curl Pro Tofino but he pulled out last minute, due to chasing a swell at home. My good friend Ryan Meichtry(filmmaker) called me because he was going to be part of the trip before Logan pulled out. We hashed out a plan to go on the trip anyway! I called my two best buddies (Dane Anderson and Willem Banks) and said “you better have $500 because we’re going to Canada!” It sort of just fell into place and happened.

You Santa Cruz boys, Dane Anderson, Willem Banks and yourself, really showcased the difference in skill level between California surfers and Canadian surfers by putting on a clinic up here. Did you have a game plan coming in to the contest or did you just want to go out there and have fun.

I wouldn’t say there’s a skill level difference. I squeaked through a few close heats and so did Dane and Willem. Canadian surfers shred! I think we just wanted to show the local boys we could rip too! The game plan was definitely just to go have fun!

Describe your emotions when you took down the defending champion, Pete Devries, in the finals and in his own back yard?

Peter is an amazing surfer! It was a really close heat. I think I just had this gut feeling I could take him out. I got lucky and the judges liked it! It was big for me. I hadn’t won a comp in a long time! Felt amazing and still does.

Has the name “Champ” sunk in yet, or are you still getting used to it?

Still not used to it.

What did you think of the whole contest weekend?

I thought it was magical! Good vibes, fun waves, sunshine, food, groms, dogs, sand in my hair, good friends, beautiful girls and music.

How was the adventure to and from Tofino, BC? Any stand out stories you can share with us?

It was wild with no plan; complete chaos. Found some waves, drank too much, and met some very interesting people along the way. Too many stories; they’re better told in person.

What did you think of Ucluelet, BC?

I thought Ucluelet was sawwweeet!! I was only there one day and night and most of that was on a boat fishing with a few legends on Caleb Cameron’s boat (Cameron Sports Fishing). Had an epic day; which afterward turned into an awesome night! Loved the place!

Favorite thing about the area Tofino/Ucluelet, BC.

Too many things! The people, landscapes and food probably stand out the most.

Least favorite thing about Tofino/Ucluelet, BC.

Wasn’t there long enough to find anything wrong with the place hahaha

How do our girls compare to the ones down south?

They’re really beautiful people, plus there down to earth. Very sexy over all!

You think you’ll be coming back up here to defend your title? I know Pete is definitely seeking a bit of revenge.

I’d love to do this every year and if Peter and I could have another go at it, in some bigger quality surf, that would be a dream come true!

Away from the contest buzz, your team just won the NBA Finals right?
WARRIORS!!!! Baby, it was a Cinderella story this year!

Do you watch Hockey at all? If so, who’s your favorite team?

Yea! I just started getting into it the last few years! I think it’s the most entertaining sport to watch. San Jose Sharks without a doubt!

Do you know who won the Stanley Cup?

The Black Hawks

You, Noah Cohen, Logan Landry, and Heidar Logi and crew went on a pretty rad trip recently. How was it?

Iceland was raw not so good for waves, but good times were everywhere over there!
We scored a few days but it was slow searching.

Any other big trips/adventures planned for 2015?

I’m hoping for some big barrels and warm water in the near future.

Last words?

Thank you to all the amazing people who helped make this trip possible: Nick Russell,
Dylan Slater, Noah Cohen, Matt Myers, Adam Chilton, Rip Curl and Monster Energy for putting on such a sick event! I’m forgetting a ton of other names but you all rule too! Thank you!
