They came, they saw, they conquered!
In heroic fashion, Adriano De Souza became our newly crowned 2015 WCT World Champion as well as your 2015 Billabong Pipe Masters Champion. Yesterday we saw a lot of first for the WSL. Gabriel Medina became the first ever Brazilian to win the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and Adriano De Souza became the first ever Brazilian to win the Billabong Pipe Masters. The Brazilian storm is definitely no joke after the performance that they put on all year long.
On finals day, we saw lots of emotions be put to the test. 3-time world champ, Mick Fanning had probably the toughest finals day of his life. Suffering from the death of his oldest brother the day before, Mick showed incredible determination and strength to keep pushing forward toward his goal of another world title. In semi-finals #1, with very mediocre and difficult conditions, Mick unfortunately he came up just short of his goal to Gabriel Medina, who pulled of one of the craziest airs we’ve seen all contest. In semi-finals #2, Adriano De Souza went up against local superstar Mason Ho. With similar conditions, De Souza was able to advance on through to the finals which then guranteed him the World Title.
The key to Adriano’s success all year was his consistency. Always finishing strong in every event all year long and seeing his composure to be able to handle those pressure situations is the reason why he is this years Champ. For the first time ever, the WSL World Title remains in the hands of another Brazilian. We’ll see what 2016 has in store, but the Brazilian storm is legit and that WSL World Title could remain in the hands of a Brazilian for many years to come.
