For those of you that don’t know Marcus Paladino, we summed him up into one word: radical. He surfs, he skates, all around good dude, he’s a photographer (a hell of a good one to), he works with Aftanas.ca and now lives in Tofino. We sat down with Marcus Paladino to see how he got to where he is now along with a couple more random questions to throw in the mix. Enjoy!
Q: What inspired you to become a photographer/filmmaker?
A: A teacher in high school told me “Find something you love to do, then find a way to get paid for it.” I loved my photography class at the time, so I just went with that. Lost Atlas and Surf Madness was what inspired the whole Kooks thing, the idea of making a fun surf video with friends. Otherwise I was never really inspired to become a filmmaker, and I still don’t really consider myself one.
Q: Is it hard doing what you do when only a small number of Canadian surfers are actually good at surfing?
A: At first, yes. I use to just go to the beach and hope someone good was out, otherwise I was always just shooting my friends.
Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: Chinese food.
Q: If you could take photos of any 2 surfers in the world, who would they be? Why?
A: John John & Dane, because they both seem pretty modest.
Q: Have you traveled much? What’s the most fucked up travel story or experience that you can tell us?
A: Not really… I went backpacking in Mexico a few years ago and ending up care taking a ranch in the middle of nowhere.
Q: If you could sleep with one celebrity, who would it be and why?
A: I would marry Emma Watson, so I’m assuming during our marriage we would sleep together.
Q: Where did you go on your first date?
A: The beach. Obvious, right?
Q: In your opinion, what are your thoughts on the Toronto Maple Leafs?
A: I’m a Canucks fan, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Leafs. I like cheering for the underdogs.
Q: If you were stranded on a desert island, and you had to choose between a Lego set, stack of porn magazines or a walkman with a Kate Perry mix tape in it, what would you choose?
A: You can never get bored of lego.
Q: What would you do if you won $100,000?
A: Give it to my Dad/Mom/Sister.
Q: Best # you’ve ever used
Q: Tofino is a very touristy town, what’s the kookiest thing you’ve ever seen go down in that town?
A: Don’t even get me started.
Q: Can we interview you again?
A: Yeah sure.
Q: Any last words?
A: You should interview Michael Darling and ask him uncomfortable questions.
